Pers3phone is a cluster of 20 Sony Playstation 3 game consoles running Unix. This gives us access to 2 threads on a dual-core CPU and 6 PPU threads running in parallel on 6 of the 8 IBM cell processors. As a class project I got a group of undergraduate students from LARC to assemble the cluster.

Pers3phone has been used to compute knight's tours. The remainder of this page contains pictures of Pers3phone's construction and installation.

The PlayStations arrive at LARC. Two of the boxes are damaged, so we opened them up to check out the contents.

After we opened them we had an impressive pile of empty boxes outside the lab. Passing students were visibly salivating.

Next we hooked them up to a TV and update the firmware.

The pile of updated consoles grew larger.

It's more efficient to do them in batches.

There sure are a lot of them to do.

We set up a server and subnet the consoles.

All ready to move to the machine room.

That's where they'll go.

Almost done.

Ready to roll.
